After several years in full-time roles, I moved to working independently. The change wasn’t really about the work itself; the code looks much the same. What changed was everything around it: how I choose projects, how I scope them, and how I think about the relationship with a client over months and years rather than a single sprint.
What I was looking for
- Depth over breadth. A small number of long-term clients I understand deeply, rather than a constant churn of new contexts.
- Ownership. Being close enough to the problem to make real decisions, not just implement tickets.
- Room to write. Time to reflect on the craft, which is part of why this site exists.
